Local Food in Denmark

Tonight we had dinner with our friends Otto and Helle Reedtz-Thott from Gavnoe, Denmark. We don’t get to see them much, as they have two young boys and a baby girl on the way. Helle chose Bar Americain (Bobby Flay’s restaurant) which was festive and the food delicious. It was great to have some one-on-one time with them, as the last few times we’ve seen them was with a big crowd (Henry’s 50th birthday party in June 2005 in Sagaponack and our wedding at The New York Palace Hotel in May 2004)! We made it to Otto’s 50th birthday party at Gavnoe in 2004 but unfortunately did miss their wedding at Gavnoe in 2002.

I was so excited to hear about what’s going on in the local food movement in Gavnoe where Otto and Helle have a fruit and vegetable, wheat, rapeseed and cow and wild boar farm and a brand new brewery called CASTLE BREWERY that Helle recently launched. At this micro-brewery they make two lines of hand brewed beers using traditional brewing techniques and ingredients grown right on their property – hops, wheat and all.

There’s a beer revolution in Denmark and Helle’s on board. Move aside Carlsbad.

I can’t wait to visit Otto, Helle, the children and new baby (Helle is pregnant and due in December – maybe in June 2009 when the tulip gardens are at their peak and Tivoli in Copenhagen is open– with Henry and my stepkids Cory and Camille (Otto is Cory’s godfather).
