It was this time last year that the deer decimated my vegetable garden (see "Someone's Been Eating My Tomatoes") so I decided to try and outsmart them by planting everything in pots and keeping them up on the deck. Off to a late start, I planted everything in early June (using starter plants from Halsey's where I also get lots of flowers and plants) including mixed mesclun greens, jalapeno peppers, snap peas, cucumbers, two types of tomatoes -- my faves are the green zebras, scallions, conventional green peppers, and plenty of herbs, cilantro, parsley, rosemary, sage, thyme, and basil.
Last week, I moved the cucumbers and several of the herbs from the pots into the garden because they just didn't seem to be growing. In just four days, the cukes grew twenty-fold in size and the herbs seemed to be enjoying their new, expanded digs.
We've had lots of rain but not much sun so everything seems a little stunted for August 1 -- but, so far so good on the deer front!
