In the last two weeks, I've pretty much totally eliminated wheat, dairy, sugar, wine most animal products from my diet. And, not only am I glowing but I'm 5 pounds lighter.
I've also been eating a lot of raw and vegans foods -- which are great this time of year and low in calories and was inspired to dine at the quintessential raw foods eatery, Pure Food and Wine Restaurant on Irving Place.
We enjoyed tasting many of the dishes (our table ordered 10 in all). My favorites were the Watermelon Tomato Gazpacho made from local tomatoes and watermelon, the Sweet Corn and Cashew Tamales with Chili Spiced Portabellas, and the Lemon "Cheesecake" which of course had no cheese in it.
I found Matthew Kenney and Sarma Melngailis terrific recipe from RAW FOOD real world cookbook, which in their words and mine tastes "like summertime in a bowl". It's a great combination of sweet and refreshing from the watermelon, kick from the onions (I used red onions), ginger and jalapeno, crunch from the cucumbers and green peppers, a comfort of ripe summer tomatoes in August. I liked this chilled summer soup so much I bought the cookbook.
